Navigating the Grocery Store

posted Mar 9, 2017, 7:30 AM by Tracy Ducker, MS, RDN
The cupboards are bare, there's nothing to make for dinner; it’s time to go to the grocery store. You want to try to eat healthier, save money and get out of the grocery store quickly. Impossible you say? Never fear, it can be done even if it is a little scary and overwhelming. Grocery stores are all laid out basically the same. Around the perimeter is where you will find meat, produce, dairy, bakery and seafood, this is where you want to start. Then head into the aisles, only go down aisles that have items you want. For example, if you want to only want to drink milk and 100% fruit juice, then avoid the beverage aisle so you won’t be tempted to buy sugary drinks.
Here are a few tips to help you save money, eat healthy and save time.
  • Make a list, without one you will fall prey to impulse buying and spend more money. It is easier to create a shopping list if you have planned out your meals for the week.
  • Shop the perimeter of the store first, that is where the produce, meat, dairy, bakery and seafood are. Stock up on these fresh foods, especially the fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
  • Don’t go hungry – if you are hungry when you go shopping, you are more likely to buy impulse items and more food overall.
  • Read labels – it does take time initially, but once you have found the healthier items, your future visits will go quicker.
  • Check out the grocery store circulars for deals and specials that week and plan your meals around what is on sale.

Grocery shopping doesn’t have to be a chore, make it fun by trying to find new healthier options, trying a new fruit or vegetable, or experimenting with different vegetarian/vegan options.
